Once again, Alquería had a successful celebration of Europe’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage.  Though the official date for the celebration of European Day of Languages is September 26, at Alquería we chose to have our celebrations on Friday afternoon, September 27th,  to close out a multicultural week in the Alquería Language Department.

The students in Year Six did an amazing job educating the rest of primary about some of  the lesser studied countries in Europe!  Working in pairs, the year 6 kids rose to the challenge of creating and presenting «mini-conferences» explaining the location and main geographic features of each country, as well as a brief history, discussion of gastronomy, notable holidays, famous people, the education system, greetings in the respective langagues and short video clips showing national anthems, and traditional music or dances.    Some groups even chose to wear traditional dress for their presentations, and notably, one group offered a bite of a traditional  cake from their region (thank you Irene and Candela M. for going the extra mile!)

Two pairs of year 6 students presented their conferences to a workshop of students.  The workshops included the Year 1,  2, 3, 4, and 5 students in groups mixed by age.  They were each given a flag that randomly sent them to a «country» or workshop.  The groups then rotated four times to learn about a total of eight countries.

To cap off the celebrations, our families were very generous in providing traditional snacks from countries near and far to wind down our celebration with a sunny snack in our patio, accompanied by international music.  THANK YOU to all who helped make our celebration a success with your generous participation.

In an age of much political turmoil, and international strife, we highly value this day as a way to encourage inter-cultual understanding, and an appreciation of what Europeans have in common (to give a specific example, when many groups were looking for traditional holidays and celebrations in their country, they commented, «There are no special holidays that are different from ours!»),  as well as recognizing the richness of our differences (another comment, «really?! They eat THAT?»)

With humor and empathy, we hope to encourage a lifelong curiosity and desire to know and understand our fellow European citizens.

Una vez más, Alquería tuvo una exitosa celebración del rico patrimonio lingüístico y cultural de Europa. Aunque la fecha oficial para la celebración del Día Europeo de las Lenguas es el 26 de septiembre, en Alquería decidimos hacer nuestra celebración un día más tarde, el viernes 27 por la tarde, para cerrar una semana multicultural en el Departamento de Idiomas de Alquería.

¡Los estudiantes en Sexto hicieron un trabajo increíble y extraordinario al educar a nuestros alumnos sobre algunos de los países menos estudiados de Europa! Trabajando en parejas, los niños y niñas de sexto se enfrentaron al desafío de crear y presentar «mini-conferencias» explicando la ubicación y las principales características geográficas de cada país, así como una breve historia, discusión de su gastronomía, fiestas más notables, personajes famosos, el sistema educativo, saludos en los respectivos idiomas y cortos de video que mostraban los respectivos himnos nacionales, junto a su música y bailes tradicionales. Algunos grupos incluso eligieron disfrazarse con vestimenta tradicional para sus presentaciones, y notablemente, un grupo ofreció un bocado de un pastel tradicional de su región (¡gracias Irene y Candela M. por hacer este esfuerzo adicional!)

Dos parejas de alumnos de sexto presentaron sus conferencias en un taller para otros alumnos. Los talleres incluyeron a los alumnos de 1º, 2º, 3º, 4º y 5º en grupos mezclados por edad. Para organizar los grupos, cada alumn@ recibió una bandera que los envió al azar a un «país» o taller. Luego, los grupos rotaron cuatro veces para conocer un total de ocho países.

Para concluir las celebraciones, nuestras familias también fueron muy generosas al proporcionar meriendas tradicionales de países cercanos y lejanos para terminar la jornada en nuestro soleado patio, acompañados de música internacional. GRACIAS a todos los que ayudaron, otro año más, a que esta ya tradicional  celebración fuera un éxito.

En una época de mucha agitación política y conflictos internacionales, valoramos extraordinariamente este día como una forma de alentar la comprensión intercultural y una apreciación de lo que los europeos tienen en común (por poner un ejemplo específico, cuando muchos grupos estaban buscando las fiestas y celebraciones tradicionales en su país, comentaron: «¡No hay días festivos especiales que sean diferentes a los nuestros!»), así como también reconocieron la riqueza de nuestras diferencias (otro comentario, «¡¿En serio? ¿Se comen ESO?»)

Con humor y empatía, esperamos fomentar una curiosidad de por vida y el deseo de conocer y comprender a nuestros conciudadanos europeos.
